Bush Oven
Fire is a key element in wilderness survival that is necessary for purifying water, cooking food, warmth, tool making, predator deterrent and insect repellent to name a few. Fire needs 3 elements to burn: Oxygen + Heat + Fuel. There are infinite construction methods that alters the availability of these 3 elements, which us to use fire for various purposes. I like to use and additional feature by using insulation to limit radiant heat loss and focus thermal concentration for a targeted purpose. The image above is an abandoned termite mound that has excellent insulation properties that can be used to make an improvised camp oven by hollowing out the centre and creating a chimney outlet for the smoke. It’s fuel efficient, retains heat for hours and a great way to make damper.
